What is Coronavirus?
Coronavirus (CoV) is a type of virus that cause illness which starts from common cold and exceeds to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV). It is a type of virus that has not been identified previously in humans.
It is an ongoing viral epidemic primarily affecting mainland China, along with isolated cases in 27 other countries and territories.

Is it transmittable or non-transmittable?
Coronavirus is zoonotic, means that it is transmittable between animals and people. According to an investigation found that SARS-CoV was transmitted from civet cats to humans and MERS-CoV from dromedary camels to humans.

Spread
Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that are common in many different species of animals, including camels, cattle, cats, and bats.
Most often, spread from person-to-person happens among close contacts.  It can spread through air droplets expelled when an infected individual coughs or sneezes within a range of about 6 feet (1.8m).

Signs and symptoms
Infected may have mild to severe symptoms, like fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. In more severe cases, infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure and even death.

Preventive measures
Recommendations to prevent infection include frequent washing of hands with soap and water, not touching ones eyes, nose or mouth unless the hands are clean, and covering the mouth when coughing and sneezing, thoroughly cooking meat and eggs.

Surgical masks
Suspects of coronavirus are advisable to wear mask. Masks are also recommended for those taking care of someone who may have the disease.
There is no confirmation by the Health security authorities that surgical masks protect uninfected persons.

Treatment

There is no specific antiviral treatment recommended for Coronavirus infection.  

 

Myths about coronavirus

(a)  Is it safe to receive a letter or package from China?

Yes, it is safe. Coronavirus do not survive long on objects.


(b) Do vaccines against pneumonia protect you against the new coronavirus?

No. Vaccines against pneumonia, do not provide protection against the new CoV.


(c)  Can gargling mouthwash protect you from infection with the new Coronavirus?

No. Using mouthwash will not protect you from infection with the new coronavirus.

Some brands or mouthwash can eliminate certain microbes for a few minutes in the saliva in your mouth. However, this does not mean they protect you from CoV infection.


(d) Is there any specific medicine to prevent or treat CoV?

To date, there is no specific medicine recommended to prevent or treat the CoV.
